What is SAMR in detail

SAMR is a framework for integrating technology into education. It stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, SAMR is a tool that helps educators evaluate the ways in which technology is being used in the classroom and how it can be used to enhance learning.

The SAMR model has four levels of technology integration:

1.  Substitution: Technology is used as a direct substitute for a traditional learning task without any functional change. For example, using a digital version of a textbook instead of a physical one.

2.  Augmentation: Technology is used to provide functional improvements to a traditional learning task. For example, using an interactive whiteboard instead of a regular whiteboard to enhance the learning experience.

3.  Modification: Technology is used to redesign the learning task in a significant way. For example, using a digital simulation to teach a complex concept.

4.  Redefinition: Technology is used to create new learning opportunities that were previously impossible. For example, using virtual reality to explore historical sites or scientific concepts.

The SAMR model encourages educators to move beyond simple substitution and augmentation, and towards modification and redefinition, to create more engaging and effective learning experiences for students. By evaluating technology integration through the lens of SAMR, educators can make more informed decisions about the role of technology in the classroom and how it can best support student learning.
